Cloth diapers

We started using cloth diapers on Saturday. Finally! So far, so good, except Oscar has diaper rash. Any suggestions?

Some of our cloth diaper supplies, including some wraps from Angela and homemade wipes from Nicole. Thanks, girls!

Make sure your cloth diapers are fully rinsed (no bubbles in the rinse cycle). Burt's Bees and California Baby are easy to find diaper rash creams that are safe for cloth diapers. Also, pay attention to if a certain diaper inner material causes the rash to flare up. My daughter is sensitive to suedecloth so we avoid that completely.

Hi Melissa - congrats on this choice, it will be so much cheaper and probably more comfy too. I love the diaper wraps - so fun.

I have no experience with cloth BUT lots with diaper rash.

Naked time helps a lot, air is your friend. Wipes can be bad for bottoms too - either rise them in plain water or use Brawny paper towels with water. All other paper towels are too tough for baby skin.

We tried tons of different rash creams, no real advice there except don't use Vaseline - that actually traps in heat - same deal for burns. This used to be standard burn and rash treatment, but no longer.

Corn Starch! Sounds crazy, I know, but it really does work. I also heard good things about Buttreux's (sp?) Butt Paste.

Boudreaux's Butt Paste they call it. Great stuff -- we have tried almost every kind of diaper cream and this is the only one that does not make fair Alma cry when she has a rash. We use Johnson and Johnson the rest of the time.

Oscar might be sensitive to your washing soap, as Autumn commented, or possibly yours wipes (we discovered that Alma was sensitive to Citric Acid, which is in most types of diaper wipes).

If it is chronic diaper rash check this things, otherwise it might just be that he is extremely sensitive to his own urine and needs to be changed immediately.

Glad that you are PPP and blogging.

Hey mama! Tara here. We CDd for a long time. Then I went back to work and didn't want to do the laundry. But I keep meaning to get into it again. You'll get lots of conflicting advice on rashes! Here's what worked for us: Never use creams unless you put a disposable liner in the diaper. The cream will ruin the diaper's ability to absorb liquids. If the rash starts out as a red-all-over rash that looks like a sunburn and turns into little bumps, it's a yeast rash. Go to Whole Foods or Wild Oats and get Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) and dilute it in a spray bottle, about 10-15 drops of extract to a few ounces of distilled water. Spray it on his bottom after you clean him and let him air dry. The extract kills the yeast. You can also spray it on boobs and wipe it in his mouth if you ever get thrush.

Love the blog!
